Introducing the Pela x Katie Waiyu Artist Series: Finding Beauty in the Simple Moments

We're thrilled to introduce our latest artist collaboration—this time with the incredibly talented UK-based illustrator, Katie Waiyu (Katie Chan). Her dreamy, calming designs invite us to slow down and savor the small joys that often go unnoticed.

We sat down with Katie to learn more about her creative journey, what inspires her, and the story behind the designs in her collection.

Meet Katie Waiyu

Hi! I’m Katie, an artist based in the UK with roots in Hong Kong. I actually graduated in Medical Engineering but made the leap into art to follow my true passion. I’ve been building my career as an illustrator for the past three years—but honestly, I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember! Art has always been a big part of who I am.

What’s your favorite design in the collection?

That’s a tough one—but if I had to choose, it would be ‘Grass Fields’. It’s inspired by my childhood memories of running through fields in the British countryside. There’s something timeless and soothing about the soft jade green, and the design holds a really special place in my heart.

What do you hope people feel when they see your artwork?

Calm. That’s the feeling I hope to share. The world is noisy and fast-paced—my goal is for my art to offer a little breath of fresh air. Whether it's the flowers you pass on your daily walk or your favorite mug in the morning, I want my work to remind people of life’s quieter, beautiful moments.

What inspires your creative process?

I’m very much a homebody, so a lot of my inspiration comes from peaceful moments at home or walks in nature. I keep a sketchbook where I record little things that catch my eye—sketched in pencil or painted. From there, I translate those into digital illustrations. For me, creativity starts with noticing—slowing down enough to find joy in the everyday.

How do you see art contributing to sustainability?

Art is a universal language. It has the power to tell stories and spark emotion. I believe visual storytelling is one of the most effective ways to make sustainability feel real. Art can make environmental issues more visible, relatable, and emotionally resonant.

What excites you most about this collaboration with Pela?

Honestly, joining the Pela community is such an honor! I love that Pela is creating products with purpose, and it’s so exciting to have my art featured on something that people carry with them daily. It’s meaningful, it’s beautiful—and it’s for a cause I believe in.
