World Ocean's Day is this Friday, June 8th which also happens to be the same day as the G7 Summit.
There are several environmental holidays this week span, and we're calling it the perfect storm.
Between all of the individual action, awareness on plastic, and the G7 summit starting, we think it's time to look at enacting some serious legislation when it comes to single-use plastic and saving the ocean.
Last week we talked about World Environment Day whose theme is Beat Plastic Pollution.
This week, we want to raise awareness to several of the environmental organizations who are fighting plastic pollution and protecting the sea.
Organizations
Save the Waves:
Save the Waves is one of our favorite partners! We ran a flash sale this Earth Day, and in one weekend we donated over $3,000 to their cause!
We sell Save the Waves engraved cases and 5% of all of those sales go their awesome initiatives protecting the seas.
Here's what Save the Waves is all about, "Save The Waves protects coastal ecosystems around the world through innovative strategies in partnership with local communities.
Utilizing a unique combination of protected areas, economics, and direct action, Save The Waves partners with locals to preserve their coastal resources and in turn strengthen their communities."
Oceana:
We're so excited to announce our new partnership with Oceana! 5% of all sales of the Oceana Case will be going to their organization.
We're so happy to be partnering with them. "Oceana is the largest international ocean conservation and advocacy organization. Oceana works to protect and restore the world’s oceans through targeted policy campaigns."
Surfrider:
We attended the Global Wave Conference this year in Santa Cruz, CA. It was hosted by Save the Waves and Surfrider!
It was so great to listen and learn from an organization that has more than 84 chapters in the US and affiliates across the globe.
"The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network."
5 Ways to Celebrate
1. Donate:
One of the easiest ways to help organizations protect our shores is to donate! They know exactly how get the most bang for your buck.
2. Attend or Host a Clean-Up:
Many of these organizations host beach cleanups. If you can't find one, why not host one?
If you're not near a beach, you can always pick up a park or your street. All of the litter along the roads eventually makes it's way to the ocean.
All storm drains lead to the sea.
3. Say No to Single-Use:
If you're looking for ideas to ditch single-use plastic check out our last blog post!
4. Get Involved in a Campaign:
Oceana and Save the Waves are always running campaigns around important issues. You can use your voice along with hundreds and thousands of others to demand change!
5. Take Action:
Head on over to their websites. The each have a Take Action section where you can read more on the issues that they're working on.
