Meet the Artist:
My name is Carissa Potter and I am a human longing for connection. I tell stories through various mediums, using words and images and conversations. Once in 2005, I got a life size piece of paper out and brainstormed with my crush all the ways our relationship was a bad idea and how it could work out. We never dated, and I don't know what I was thinking, but I am sure it was like a drug to have this conversation and record of it. I live in Oakland California with my partner and kiddo and dad. Nowadays, I draw a lot of cats 'cuz my kid likes cats, just started my 7th book, and host a podcast because I like talking to people.

"A lot of my work is about noticing what I'm anxious about or what I'm thinking. I think about what I would long to hear in that moment. I draw it out and hope someone else can relate. Inspiration for me is both showing up on a schedule and also catching it on the fly. I also practice it, meaning I lean into what's going on around me, what people are talking about, how attitudes are shifting."

Making the Collection
What message or feeling do you hope your artwork conveys to those who see it?
"Just that they can relate. Maybe it's something someone is longing to hear. To feel comfort. Permission to be what they're longing to be. Relief that even though it's a hard world, they're not alone. We tend to beat ourselves up, be our most critical voice, and sometimes, when you just throw it all out there, we really are not that bad."
What’s the most exciting part about this collaboration for you?

"Part of me longs to feel special and unique, but years of sharing this work has taught me I'm human, and if I'm feeling something, someone else probably is too."

FAQs
How protective is a Pela Case?
Let's face it, a compostable phone case NEEDS to also protect your phone from daily drops… otherwise what’s the point?
We’ve had the Pela Case tested to far beyond your average phone drop out of a pocket so you can rest assured that the job of a phone case is still getting done.
What does a Pela Case feel like?
Soft, flexible and a little bit of grip is how every Pela Case can be described. Outside of being one of the most protective cases on the planet, the next most important thing is how a case feels in your hands!
Protect Your Phone and the Planet™
What materials are used to make a Pela Case?
The Pela Case is made of Flaxstic®, which is comprised of compostable bioplastic elastomer and flax straw materials. Our material has been tested to be safe and free of phthalates, BPA, cadmium and lead and is verified to meet child safety standards in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Our base material meets U.S. (ASTM D6400-04) and E.U. (EN 13432) standards for composting in an industrial composting facility and has a lower carbon footprint and lower greenhouse gas emissions than traditional plastic. It can also be left to compost in a home composting environment.
Where are Pela Cases manufactured?
More than 80% of our cases are manufactured in Canada.
Our Kelowna Sustainability Studio (KSS), in Canada, manufactures and engraves our classic Pela Case and also collects and regrinds materials from our Pela 360 Program to make new products. It is also the home of our laboratory equipment and where we conduct compost testing on our existing material and play with developing and testing new materials and products.
How do I dispose of my Pela Case?
Responsibility Economy™
We take responsibility for our Pela products throughout their entire life cycle.
Pela phone cases are especially easy to dispose of. Once you are ready to compost your Pela Case, all you’ll need to do is toss your used case in your backyard compost bin, give it all a mix, and let the microorganisms do the rest of the work or add it to your Lomi Approved cycle. If you don’t have a backyard compost bin, check with your local composting facility to see if they accept bioplastics, or return your phone case to us and participate in the Pela 360 program.
